Even with the power of my blood bond to Eric, and the incredible power of all the Wardwell witches that was used to bring my spirit back to my body, I felt exhausted. Eric helped me up from the kitchen floor with Onyx watching me like a hawk; like she was waiting for my body to suddenly reject my spirit and propel it across time and space.

When I got to my feet my knees wobbled, Eric wrapped his arm around my back.

“I’ve got you.”

He bent like he was about to pick me up, but I held my hand out to stop him.

“It’s okay. I think I was just a little dizzy from getting up too fast, but I’m fine now.”

I turned on my heels to head back to the stove where I’d left my grimoire when I’d done the spell that sent my spirit out into the world without my body.

“Whoa,” Eric took a hold of my arm, “where are you going? I think the couch is a better place for you to rest right now.”

Shaking my head, I said, “No. I don’t need rest. I need to try again.”

“Are you crazy?” Onyx freaked out. “You nearly died.”

“Onyx is right,” Eric said. “You can’t think we’re going to let you do that again, especially when you can barely stand without your knees buckling. It’s too dangerous.”

“No, you don’t understand. I saw Danylynn. Just before my body yanked me back here, I found her. I need to go back.”

I tried to yank my arm away from Eric, but he might as well have had super-human strength for all the good it did me. Focusing on his hand on my arm to pull it away with my magic didn’t even create a spark or anything, so I closed my eyes and gave it my all. My breath rushed out of me and my limbs went limp. Eric caught me before I could hit the floor, but if he had not been there I would have completely wiped out, and I doubt I could have gotten myself back up.

“I can’t believe you’re trying to use magic right now,” Onyx snipped.

It took way more strength than it should have for me to turn my head and glare at her.

“She’s right,” Eric said. “You need to get some rest before you try anything else.”

“The two of you are going to make me regret making it so you could hear Onyx.”

“Don’t get mad because we’re both looking out for you,” Eric said. “We both would be doing the same thing even if I still couldn’t hear her. No way I’m letting you try to go after anyone as weak as you are right now.”

“Fine. I’ll rest for an hour and try again.”

Eric pinned me with his eyes.

“How about you rest for an hour, then we’ll reassess. And to be clear, if you are going to try that spell again, I’m going to be there with you. No more running off and trying shit that can kill you on your own.
