Even with the power of my blood bond to Eric, and the incredible power of all the Wardwell witches that was used to bring my spirit back to my body, I felt exhausted. Eric helped me up from the kitchen floor with Onyx watching me like a hawk; like she was waiting for my body to suddenly reject my spirit and propel it across time and space.
When I got to my feet my knees wobbled, Eric wrapped his arm around my back.
âIâve got you.â
He bent like he was about to pick me up, but I held my hand out to stop him.
âItâs okay. I think I was just a little dizzy from getting up too fast, but Iâm fine now.â
I turned on my heels to head back to the stove where Iâd left my grimoire when Iâd done the spell that sent my spirit out into the world without my body.
âWhoa,â Eric took a hold of my arm, âwhere are you going? I think the couch is a better place for you to rest right now.â
Shaking my head, I said, âNo. I donât need rest. I need to try again.â
âAre you crazy?â Onyx freaked out. âYou nearly died.â
âOnyx is right,â Eric said. âYou canât think weâre going to let you do that again, especially when you can barely stand without your knees buckling. Itâs too dangerous.â
âNo, you donât understand. I saw Danylynn. Just before my body yanked me back here, I found her. I need to go back.â
I tried to yank my arm away from Eric, but he might as well have had super-human strength for all the good it did me. Focusing on his hand on my arm to pull it away with my magic didnât even create a spark or anything, so I closed my eyes and gave it my all. My breath rushed out of me and my limbs went limp. Eric caught me before I could hit the floor, but if he had not been there I would have completely wiped out, and I doubt I could have gotten myself back up.
âI canât believe youâre trying to use magic right now,â Onyx snipped.
It took way more strength than it should have for me to turn my head and glare at her.
âSheâs right,â Eric said. âYou need to get some rest before you try anything else.â
âThe two of you are going to make me regret making it so you could hear Onyx.â
âDonât get mad because weâre both looking out for you,â Eric said. âWe both would be doing the same thing even if I still couldnât hear her. No way Iâm letting you try to go after anyone as weak as you are right now.â
âFine. Iâll rest for an hour and try again.â
Eric pinned me with his eyes.
âHow about you rest for an hour, then weâll reassess. And to be clear, if you are going to try that spell again, Iâm going to be there with you. No more running off and trying shit that can kill you on your own.
